Kulturnatten 2014

Another year in Copenhagen, another year of Kulturnatten!

This year, we tried to stay away from the areas we went to in the previous year, and I have to say that it wasn’t as jam packed with events… which was slightly disappointing, but I still had a lot of fun with my friends and I was able to see and experience many new things. We started off by waiting in a long (but quick) line to the parliament. We thought that since so many people were interested in entering, it was going to be something worth seeing, but after getting through security and entering the premises… we realized it was just a bunch of rooms with the various political parties campaigning. I was able to get a free bag of carrots, though! Thank goodness for Danish political parties and their willingness to give out free produce.

After walking around the parliament a little bit, we entered the royal stables where I was able to pet majestic-looking horses, and then we entered the ruins of Copenhagen Castle (which, as the ruins suggest, does not exist any longer). I didn’t really take the time to learn too much, but I just remember there being a lot of alchemy involved… which I totally would’ve done as a profession back in the day… but now back on topic… We grabbed a few beers in Nyhavn and headed towards the water taxi, which took us to the Operaen (the Opera House located in Copenhagen). The building itself is magnificent, but surprisingly very small on the inside. We snapped a few photos, went on the various balconies, and then headed towards an architectural school, where we tried the 3D gaming system known as Oculus Rift.

The Oculus Rift was such an interesting experience! After a few seconds of being inside this virtual reality, you really begin to feel like you’re inside. And it’s very easy to become dizzy or disoriented (one of my friend’s couldn’t do it for longer than a few minutes). Unfortunately the map they had loaded was that of an architectural school… I was really hoping to run around some haunted house, or fight some dragons on a mountain! Still an interesting experience that I recommend anyone to try, given the chance.

I then convinced my friends to head across the street to an art school, which decorated each of their rooms with a different theme. One of the rooms was this “haunted” hallway type of a deal, where at the end of the hall, there was a large room of students in character eating and drinking while a dead body was hanging above the table. Now that I think of it, it reminded me of the opening scene of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows where Voldemort rallied his Death Eaters in the Malfoy Manor. Just to give you a better idea. And on the other side of the spectrum, one of the other rooms had a projection of a silhouette stripping in a bedroom-esque setting.

We then took off towards this Scottish event which was supposed to have Scottish food, and bagpipe music… however, what we ended up arriving to was a tour on the history of boy scouts in Denmark… something completely different from what we wanted…. but at least the man giving the tour was nice. He seemed a bit lonely though, and was incredibly thankful for us coming by. At least we made one nice man’s day that night!

The final, and probably my favourite, event we attended that night was called ChurChill and as you may assume, we chilled in a church. They moved the pews out of the center, and put a bunch of cushions on the ground. The point of this was to simply lay on the ground, listen to the music that they were producing, and look at the hypnotic patterns and colours they were projecting onto the ceiling. We all laid on each other, and it was such a strangely relaxing experience. A no, I was not high on any drugs during this whole experience!

Overall, this Kulturnatten was not as eventful as the last, but it was still good in its own way. You can check out my post on Kulturnatten 2013 here, and feel free to check out some photos from that evening below! Vi ses i senere!
